Is Weekly Therapy Not Moving Fast Enough?

You came to therapy to feel better — not to spend months in sessions that feel like you're starting over every week. Do any of these sound familiar?

You've been in therapy for months — or years — but you still feel emotionally stuck, triggered by the same things, unable to move past what happened to you.

You have a packed schedule and adding another weekly appointment feels overwhelming — but the trauma, anxiety, or grief you're carrying isn't getting any lighter.

You need real relief — now. You can't white-knuckle through your days for another year waiting for gradual progress.

You've hit a plateau in therapy. You've done the work. You understand your patterns. But something still feels stuck — and you're ready for a breakthrough.

You're a busy professional, parent, or ministry leader who can carve out a few dedicated days for deep healing, but can't commit to weekly sessions for months on end.

EMDR Intensives compress 6–12 months of traditional therapy into just 1–3 focused days.

What is EMDR Intensive Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a gold-standard, evidence-based trauma therapy recognized by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It uses bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements, tapping, or tones—to activate the brain's natural ability to process and heal distressing memories.

An EMDR Intensive takes this already-powerful treatment and supercharges it by removing the constraints of a 50-minute weekly session. Instead of spreading EMDR processing across months of appointments, an intensive format delivers 3 to 6 hours of deep, uninterrupted EMDR therapy per day—over one to three consecutive days—giving your brain the extended, unhurried time it needs to fully process and resolve trauma.

This format was actually how EMDR was originally designed to be delivered. Research has consistently shown that intensive EMDR therapy produces results equivalent to—or better than—weekly therapy, in a fraction of the time.

The SRWC EMDR Intensive: Three Phases of Healing

01

Pre-Intensive Interview (60–90 min)

02

EMDR Intensive Sessions (Half-Day to Multi-Day)

03

Post-Intensive Integration (60 min)

We meet for a thorough intake to identify your goals, review your history, assess your nervous system's readiness, and build a fully customized EMDR treatment plan. You'll also develop grounding and resourcing tools to use throughout the intensive.

Your clinician guides you through focused EMDR reprocessing—targeting the specific memories, beliefs, and emotional wounds at the root of your distress. With hours of uninterrupted processing time, you can move through material that might take months to reach in weekly therapy.

We close with a reflection session to help you integrate insights, consolidate the shifts you've made, and create a clear roadmap for carrying your healing forward into daily life.

Benefits of EMDR Intensive Therapy

An EMDR Intensive is like a personal healing retreat—dedicated entirely to your freedom.

  • Accelerated trauma healing: Process in days what traditional weekly therapy may take 6-12 months to reach.

  • Deeper, uninterrupted processing: Extended sessions allow the brain to fully reprocess traumatic material without stopping mid-session.

  • Faster symptom relief: Experience meaningful reduction in PTSD symptoms, anxiety, flashbacks, emotional numbness, and intrusive thoughts—often within a single intensive.

  • Cost-effective trauma treatment: Fewer total sessions means less money spent on therapy over time.

  • Flexible scheduling: Block off a few days rather than committing to months of weekly appointments—ideal for busy professionals, parents, and ministry leaders.

  • Gentler on the nervous system: Longer sessions allow more time to settle in, do deep work, and fully close each session.

  • Adjunct-friendly: Use as a powerful supplement to your existing weekly therapy when you feel stuck or ready for a breakthrough.

Who Is an EMDR Intensive Right For?

Our EMDR Intensive program in New Jersey and New York is designed for motivated adults who are ready for deep, focused work. You may be an ideal candidate if you:

  • Are experiencing PTSD, Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), or trauma-related symptoms impacting your daily life, relationships, or work performance

  • Want to avoid a long therapy waitlist and need faster access to effective trauma treatment

  • Have a busy schedule that makes weekly therapy sessions difficult to maintain consistently

  • Are already in weekly therapy but feel stuck—or sense you're close to a breakthrough and don't want to lose momentum

  • Are a helping professional—therapist, nurse, pastor, educator, first responder—struggling with burnout or secondary traumatic stress

  • Are approaching a major life transition (marriage, childbirth, career change, relocation) and want to enter it with emotional freedom

  • Live outside New Jersey or New York but can travel for an in-person intensive—or prefer a virtual EMDR intensive from home

  • Want a faith-integrated EMDR experience that honors both your emotional needs and your spiritual beliefs

Conditions EMDR Intensive Therapy Can Treat

Our EMDR Intensive therapists in New Jersey and New York are trained to treat a wide range of trauma-related and emotional health concerns, including:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbing, and intrusive memories following a single traumatic event

  • Complex PTSD (C-PTSD): Chronic trauma from childhood abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or prolonged emotional harm

  • Medical Trauma: Traumatic experiences related to illness, surgery, hospitalization, or childbirth

  • Sexual Assault and Abuse Trauma: Processing the lasting emotional impact of sexual violence or abuse

  • Accident and Injury Trauma: Car accidents, workplace injuries, or sudden loss events

Traditional Weekly EMDR Therapy

  • 4 sessions x 50 minutes = approximately 200 minutes of total session time

  • Of that, roughly 40-60 minutes is actual EMDR processing (after check-ins, crisis management, and closing rituals)

  • Cost: approximately $1,200-$1,600/mo

  • Weekly gaps between sessions can interrupt processing and allow re-traumatization of open material

  • A single stressor may take multiple months—or longer—to fully resolve

EMDR Intensive Therapy

  • Half-day to multi-day format: 160—300+ minutes of uninterrupted EMDR processing

  • Equivalent to 6-12 months of traditional weekly therapy processing time

  • No weekly interruptions—your brain stays immersed in the healing process

  • One or multiple stressors often fully resolve within the intensive

  • Less total money spent over the course of your healing journey

Frequently Asked Questions

1 / What is EMDR intensive therapy and how does it work?

EMDR intensive therapy is an accelerated treatment format that delivers multiple hours of EMDR processing per day—over one to three consecutive days—rather than spreading treatment across weekly 50-minute sessions. By giving the brain extended, uninterrupted time to process traumatic memories using bilateral stimulation, EMDR intensives allow for deeper and faster healing than the traditional weekly model. Research consistently shows that intensive EMDR produces results equivalent to or better than weekly therapy in a significantly shorter timeframe.

2 / How long does an EMDR intensive take?

EMDR intensives at Simply Redefining Wellness & Counseling range from a half-day (approximately 3–4 hours) to multi-day programs (up to 3 consecutive days, with 3–6 hours of therapy per day). The right length depends on your treatment goals, trauma history, and nervous system capacity—all of which we assess during your Pre-Intensive Interview before building your personalized program.

3 / How much does an EMDR intensive cost?

EMDR Intensive packages at Simply Redefining Wellness start at $1,550 for a half-day intensive and range up to $3,800 for a multi-day program. While the upfront cost is higher than a single weekly session, most clients find that intensives are more cost-effective overall—because they require fewer total sessions and produce results that might otherwise take months of weekly therapy to achieve. Installment options are available. All fees are provided in writing in advance per the No Surprises Act.

4 / Does insurance cover EMDR intensive therapy?

Some PPO insurance plans offer partial out-of-network reimbursement for psychotherapy services. We recommend calling the customer service number on the back of your insurance card to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits. We provide a detailed superbill (itemized receipt) for all direct therapy services, which you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

5 / Is EMDR intensive therapy supported by research?

Yes. A substantial and growing body of peer-reviewed clinical research supports the use of intensive EMDR therapy for PTSD and trauma-related conditions. Studies show that intensive EMDR is well-tolerated, produces reliable improvement in PTSD symptoms in a short timeframe, and may be a safe and effective treatment alternative for Complex PTSD. Intensive formats have also been shown to reduce early dropout—one of the most significant barriers to healing in conventional therapy.

6 / Are EMDR intensives available online or do I need to come in person?

Both options are available at Simply Redefining Wellness & Counseling. Virtual EMDR intensives are conducted via a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform and are available to clients throughout New Jersey and New York. In-person intensives are available at our New Jersey office. Research confirms that online EMDR therapy is as effective as in-person treatment.

7 / What is the difference between a half-day and a multi-day EMDR intensive?

A half-day intensive (3–4 hours) is ideal for single-incident trauma, performance goals, or a focused breakthrough on one specific issue. A multi-day intensive (2–3 days) allows for deeper processing of complex or layered trauma, multiple stressors, or a more comprehensive healing experience—similar to a personal therapeutic retreat. During your free consultation, we'll recommend the format best suited to your needs.

8 / Can I do an EMDR intensive if I'm already seeing a therapist?

Absolutely—and this is one of the most powerful uses of EMDR intensive therapy. Many clients use our intensive program as an adjunct to their existing weekly therapy when they're feeling stuck or ready for a deeper level of processing. With your permission, your SRWC clinician will coordinate with your current therapist before and after the intensive to maximize the benefit to your ongoing care.

9 / What is a Christian or faith-based EMDR intensive?

A faith-integrated EMDR intensive incorporates spiritual principles—such as prayer, Scripture, and reflection on God's truth—alongside evidence-based EMDR processing. At Simply Redefining Wellness, faith integration is completely optional and always led by you. For clients who desire it, we weave biblical grounding into the EMDR process, including resource installation using faith-based imagery, processing of spiritual wounds or religious trauma, and reflection on healing through grace and identity in Christ.

10 / What are the risks of EMDR intensive therapy?

EMDR intensive therapy is widely considered safe and well-tolerated. Because intensive sessions go deeper and faster than weekly therapy, some clients experience emotional fatigue or heightened sensitivity in the days following their intensive—which is a normal and meaningful part of the healing process. Your clinician will regularly check in and adjust the pace to ensure the work remains grounded and manageable.
