Faith-Based Counseling in New Jersey & New York

You Shouldn't Have to Leave Your Faith at the Door

For a lot of people, therapy has felt like a space where faith isn't welcome—where your relationship with God gets politely set aside while someone hands you coping strategies that have nothing to do with how you actually see the world.

That's not what we do here.

At Simply Redefining Wellness & Counseling, faith isn't a footnote. For many of our clients, it's the foundation. Our licensed clinicians are trained therapists and people who understand what it means to live a faith-centered life—the beauty of it, the weight of it, and the particular kind of pain that comes when your faith feels shaken, weaponized, or simply not enough to carry what you're going through.

If you've been looking for a therapist who actually gets it—this is that space.

Who This Is For

Faith-based counseling at SRWC is for you if:

  • You want a therapist who respects and incorporates your Christian faith—not one who treats it as a variable to work around

  • You're carrying anxiety, depression, grief, or trauma and you want healing that speaks to your whole self—mind, heart, and spirit

  • You're in a season of spiritual doubt, burnout, or disconnection from God and you need someone who won't flinch at that

  • You've been hurt by the church, religious leadership, or religious environments and need a safe place to process that

  • You want therapy that can hold both clinical truth and biblical truth without forcing you to choose between them

  • You're navigating a relationship, family, or identity struggle and want your faith values honored in how it's addressed

You don't have to be in a crisis of faith to benefit. And you don't have to have it all figured out before you come in. You just have to be willing to show up.

What Healing Can Look Like Here

Faith-based counseling is not Bible study. It's not pastoral counseling. It's licensed, evidence-based therapy—practiced by clinicians who also understand Scripture, spiritual life, and the unique dynamics that come with living inside a faith community.

What that looks like in practice:

  • Using prayer, Scripture, and reflection as therapeutic tools—not decoration

  • Exploring how your beliefs shape your thought patterns, relationships, and sense of self

  • Naming and healing shame that has been reinforced by religious messaging

  • Finding grounding in God's presence during trauma processing and EMDR work

  • Rebuilding your identity and worth when a faith community has caused harm

  • Integrating your spiritual values into how you make decisions, set boundaries, and relate to others

You set the tone. Some clients want prayer to open every session. Others want faith woven into the conversation naturally. Others are still figuring out where they stand. All of that is welcome here.

What We Treat

Our faith-based clinicians specialize in helping clients navigate:

  • Anxiety & chronic worry — including fear, perfectionism, and the spiritual weight of "not trusting God enough"

  • Depression & emotional numbness — including loss of spiritual motivation and disconnection from what once brought meaning

  • Trauma & PTSD — including childhood wounds, abuse, and adverse experiences processed through a faith-integrated lens

  • Religious & spiritual trauma — harm caused by church environments, leadership, legalism, or religious abuse

  • Grief & loss — including the crisis of faith that can accompany devastating loss

  • Relationship & marriage struggles — for individuals and couples who want their faith values centered in the work

  • Identity & purpose — navigating calling, worth, and who God says you are when life has told you something different

  • Burnout in ministry or service — for those who give endlessly to others and have nothing left for themselves

Our Approach

Our therapists integrate clinical modalities with spiritual practice—meeting you wherever you are in your faith journey:

Examining thought patterns through the lens of both psychology and biblical truth

Why Simply Redefining Wellness & Counseling

Janelle Thompson, our Founder and Clinical Director, built this practice on a simple conviction: Jesus and therapy. Not one or the other. Both—together—as a complete path to healing.

That conviction shapes everything about how we work. Our therapists are licensed professionals who bring genuine faith, cultural competence, and clinical depth to every session. We understand the specific pressures that come with being a person of faith navigating mental health—the stigma inside faith communities, the fear of being judged, the hope that God alone should be enough.

We hold all of that with care. And we help you move through it.

We serve diverse, multicultural, and faith-centered clients across New Jersey and New York—including Black and Brown communities where the intersection of faith and mental health carries particular weight and particular stigma.

This practice was built for people like you.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 / Do I have to be Christian to receive faith-based counseling?

Our faith-based services are designed around Christian principles, but you don't have to have it all figured out. Clients in seasons of doubt, questioning, or spiritual transition are welcome here. If you're not sure whether faith integration is right for you, just let us know — we can tailor the approach accordingly.

2 / What's the difference between faith-based counseling and pastoral counseling?

Faith-based counseling at SRWC is licensed, evidence-based therapy delivered by credentialed mental health clinicians — not pastoral staff. We use clinical modalities like CBT, EMDR, and narrative therapy, and we weave in spiritual principles where desired. It's the clinical depth of therapy with the spiritual grounding of faith.

3 / Do you treat religious trauma?

Yes. Harm caused by church environments, religious leadership, legalism, or spiritual abuse is something our clinicians are equipped to address. This is a safe, non-judgmental space to process those experiences.

4 / Do you accept insurance for faith-based counseling?

Yes — faith-based counseling is billed the same as standard individual therapy. We accept several major insurance plans. Contact us to verify your specific coverage.

5 / Can faith integration be optional?

Absolutely. You set the tone entirely. Some clients want prayer and Scripture woven throughout. Others prefer faith to come up organically in conversation. Others want standard therapy with a clinician who simply understands their faith background. All of those are available here.
